On 21 November 1990, the Australasian Registrars Committee (ARC) then known as the Australian Registrars Committee was founded in Canberra at the CAMA (Council of Australian Museums Association) Conference. The establishment of ARC revolutionised the registration profession in Australia by representing and promoting the professional role of registrars in museums. For the first time registration was recognised as an integral component within an institution and the profession became more discernible to our professional colleagues and museum directors.
ARC has laid its foundations within the museum profession and continues to achieve its aims of representing and promoting the role of registrars, collection managers and registration practices in cultural institutions both on a national and international level. In April 2007 the ARC adopted a name change to Australasian Registrars Committee formally including New Zealand within the scope of its membership and activities.
The Committee is dedicated to encouraging the professional development of members by providing forums for exchanging ideas and expertise between registrars, collection managers and professionals in related fields in museums. ARC publishes a journal that is received by all members as a benefit of membership.
ARC uses the journal to address topical issues facing contemporary registrars and collection managers and all members are encouraged to participate by submitting articles and related news. ARC also produces the more informal Off the Record (OTR) an eNews bulletin emailed direct to Members. ARC Members are welcome to submit for inclusion in OTR news on upcoming training opportunities and seminars, recommended industry publications and articles and staff movements. Non-Members are also invited to submit articles for OTR and the ARC journal. We also have a discussion listserv available to all members through email. All members are encouraged to join. The list facilitates the exchange of information by encouraging and maintaining communication among registrars and associated professions.
The objectives of the Committee are:
- to affirm, represent and promote the professional role of registrars and collection managers in museums;
- to encourage professional registration practices in museums;
- to encourage and maintain communication and co-operation among registrars, between registrars and other museum staff, and between registrars and people in related service fields;
- to co-operate with other related professional associations;
- to encourage the professional development of members.
