The Institute of Art & Law – short course on museum deaccession

December 5 @ 11:00 pm - December 6 @ 4:00 am

The Institute of Art & Law branding

The IAL will once again be offering a short course on museum deaccession for museum practitioners and other professionals, to run online on the afternoon of 5th December 2024. The course will cover the major legal and ethical issues that need to be considered in this challenging area, including new changes to charity law in the UK that will have a significant impact on the sector. Numerous examples of deaccessioning have shown the problems which can arise, from the undermining of public trust and loss of accreditation status to retracted sales and financial penalties.

Sessions to include:

  • The law of deaccession
  • The ethics of deaccession
  • Restitution and repatriation
  • Practical exercises

This short course will be taught by Alexander Herman (Director, IAL) and Emily Gould (Assistant Director, IAL), who have taught this and other museum-related topics in the UK, Australia, Canada, the Gulf Region and Norway. The course will be ideal for UK practitioners, but it will also offer international comparisons and best practice, making it of great use to professionals around the world. Topical guidance like Restitution and Repatriation: A practical guide for museums in England (Arts Council England) will be considered.

Date and Time: 5th December 2024, from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm (UK time) (11.00 pm to 4.00 am AEDT)

Method of delivery: Online, via Zoom. A link will be sent to those who sign up.

Cost: UK residents: £96.00 (price includes VAT); non-UK residents: £80.00 (price excludes VAT); IAL members, UKRG members and BADA members receive 50% off.
